The Fairlawn Rotary honors a local person for their contribution to the community. This year's honoree is Bill Roth
Bill was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He attended the University
of Buffalo and majored in history along with a minor in political science.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1980. In May of 1983 he
graduated from the University of Akron’s Law School. In July of that year,
he took and passed the bar exam and in August he met his wife, Jolene.
From 1983-1989 he served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in the
Summit County Prosecutor’s Offi ce under Prosecutor Lynn Slaby. He
worked in the criminal trial division trying anything from felony theft to
aggravated murder cases. In 1989 he voluntarily left the prosecutor’s
offi ce and worked in the private practice of law as a trial attorney.
During this time period he also served in the City of Fairlawn’s Mayor’s
Court as a magistrate and on the Fairlawn Civil Service Commission. In
November of 1995 he was elected to be Mayor of the City of Fairlawn.
He then served in this position for the next 27 years, being elected a
total of seven times to serve in this offi ce. He also served on the Akron,
Bath, Fairlawn JEDD Board, as President of the Summit County Mayor’s
Association, on the Summit County Reworks Board and as statewide
chairman of the “Broadband Access Ohio” coalition. He is also a member
of the Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis Club and Fairlawn Lutheran Church.
This year marks his 40th year in the practice of law, he still continues to
work in the probate fi eld including wills, trusts and estates. Bill feels very
fortunate in life and has enjoyed working with coworkers, associates,
other professionals and the making of many friends along the way.
